Rationale
“It’s a love-letter to rural Australia, evoking the nature and space I miss. Reflecting on my relocation from Victoria to Europe, it celebrates community and family – bound not necessarily by blood or ancestry, but by togetherness. The natural Australiana colour-scheme of muted tones references the unique landscape of Benalla.”
About REKA
Categorising REKA’s style proves challenging, given his fusion of abstraction and surrealism. His expression unfolds through vibrant colours, dynamic movement, and bold lines. The artist’s time spent navigating the streets served as a crucial period for skill development and experimentation with diverse mediums. While he acknowledges a growing passion for studio painting in recent years, REKA, being youthful and deeply connected to his street roots, finds it challenging to completely detach from where he originated.
Curator’s Choice
Zammit says, “I caught up with REKA in Malta last year, and we took a trip down memory lane, reminiscing about Melbourne’s street art scene before he embarked on his overseas journey more than 10 years ago. I proposed that his involvement would be warmly welcomed, and fortunately, he agreed. I am eager to witness the evolution of a local talent who has now embraced an international perspective after a decade away.”
