Rationale

Artwork Title: Benalla Friend

This piece is a celebration of arrival and the indelible mark that travel leaves upon the spirit. The artist has captured the wide eyed wonder of an outsider encountering the unique beauty of Benalla for the first time. Through the lens of his character, we see the town reflected back with fresh clarity. The local flora and fauna are rendered with a playful curiosity, while the warmth of the cafes and the hum of the creative energy are transformed into the very fabric of the character’s identity.   

The concept of pinning impressions as badges is a narrative device. It suggests that our experiences are not just fleeting moments but physical weight we carry with us, defining who we become by where we go. Each badge represents a specific memory, a conversation, or a shared experience. 

By creating the Benalla Friend as someone who remains here even as the artist leaves, the work speaks to the idea that art acts as an anchor. It creates a permanent tether between visitors and the community. This mural is a reminder that we are all collections of the places we love, and that once you experience the hospitality of this town, a piece of you stays behind to become part of the local landscape.

About Timur

Timur Fork (b. 1986) is a Moscow-based artist who emerged from the Russian graffiti movement of the early 2000s, becoming known for character-driven street works across Moscow, Barcelona, Paris and Osaka. A pivotal injury in 2017 prompted a shift from walls to canvas, transforming his street language into a distinctive studio practice.

He is the founder of ‘plasticine realism’ — hyperrealistic paintings that mimic hand-moulded plasticine, fusing childhood nostalgia with technical precision and three-dimensional illusion. Balancing irony, colour and dynamism, Fork creates works that are playful yet profound, bridging street culture and contemporary art through a universal visual language.
